“Coffee production is getting low year by year. So, we are working with farmers on rehabilitation, stumping and pruning coffee trees for quality coffee cherries and shorter coffee stems. - Junya Yumita - Project Coordinator, Cafe Brisa Serena

mdfglobal This week, MDF #TimorLeste continues to celebrate #WorldEnvironmentDay2022 with its partner
Café Brisa Serena, the country's first specialty coffee exporter.
Coffee is an important commodity that provides a livelihood for 75,000 Timorese households. However, the Timorese coffee crop has some of the lowest yields in the world, at an average 195kg/ha of green beans, compared with the global average of 2,000kg/ha. Part of the reason is aging trees. MDF has identified that productivity can be improved by coffee tree rehabilitation, that is, by stumping and pruning trees.
Coffee tree rehabilitation has other benefits as well. It is a climate change adaptation measure for coffee farmers. Shorter trees are less vulnerable to strong winds and use water and sunlight more effectively. Coffee trees that are correctly stumped and pruned also provide space for intercropping with other trees that can act as windbreakers and protect the coffee trees from intense sunlight and high temperature. A climate-adaptive and resilient crop will provide farmers with better yields and more stable incomes.
With MDF support, Café Brisa Serena is expanding its rehabilitation work and planted 5,832 casuarina trees in early 2022 to intercrop with its coffee trees. These trees are estimated to offset 243,194 tonnes of CO2
and act as windbreakers and shade trees to reduce the impact of adverse weather on the coffee trees.

Ducurai Village, Timor-Leste 🇹🇱
It's baaack. It's our 3rd year sourcing this fully washed lot from producers organized by the Café Brisa Serena co-op. You can check out our release from the previous years for more details.
Clean, crisp cup with red apple notes and a medium mouthfeel. In light of the craziness surrounding current shipping delays, we're grateful to still be able to source this coffee. 🙏
